i had the same problem. but i went through a bit of a roundabout way to fix the problem. i think it might work. give it a go.
Go Main Menu - Organiser - File Manager - and go to Sounds (down the bottom of that screen) and you music files should be sitting there. Just click Options when you are on that screen, and you will get a Use as option to select it as a ringtone. You might want go across the screen when you are in File Manager screen, 'coz of the Memory stick and Phone Memory.
